President's Message: November 2015

November is a time to count our blessings. We are fortunate to live in a community that embraces one another and reaches out to help those who are less fortunate. I think about the Community Outreach projects planned by Cathy Hirschhorn and Connie Salisbury and it makes me proud of our members for being such caring community members. When I was a little girl, my dad had a quote from John F. Kennedy’s Inaugural Address on his desk: Ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country. November, its theme of giving and our own mission to empower young women to go to college, reminds me to ask not what your community can do for you — ask what you can do for your community. College Club can be very proud of what it does for our community and the role we play giving back.

On a personal note, I want to thank everyone for all of the Get Well wishes to me. On October 18th, I was diagnosed with pneumonia, much to my surprise and dismay. Since my body decided to tell me to slow down, I am trying very hard to follow its warning. I am so fortunate to have the most caring family and friends who support and “force/help” me rest so that I may regain my strength and get back to my busy life schedule. I am very grateful to Jean Naugle for stepping in and smoothly running the General Meeting, in my absence, with her kind and calm manner.
October was a busy month as the weather changed from summer-like to autumn-coolness. I am so sorry to have missed our October General Meeting’s fabulous program: A Life of My Own: Meeting Eleanor Roosevelt, presented by Linda Kenyon. I’m sure that those of you who were able to attend found her presentation entertaining as well as enlightening. We continued our fundraising efforts with the Lord & Taylor Shop Smart, Do Good Fundraising Shopping Event on October 29th and I look forward to Carolyn Dittus and Ginger Rachko’s report once the earnings have been determined.
We look forward to The College Night program, which is scheduled for November 10th. I am confident that everyone’s hard work will pay off with an extremely successful evening, chaired by Sue Spirko and Joanne Glover. This event is another fine example of our strength of working together. It takes many members to provide the food and manpower to host such a large event with so many colleges in attendance.
Believe it or not, our Holiday Party is just around the corner on Monday, December 7th. Pat Swick, Helen Piasecki and Liz Strong are coordinating an evening filled with holiday spirit and fun! Once the holidays arrive, it is a month-long race to the end of 2015. As we begin 2016, we will be even closer to our Spring Event. I appreciate having heard from some members regarding their area to volunteer in for the Spring Event; however, we need 100% participation of our members in some capacity. So think about how you can best participate in our TEAM effort to raise monies to support our scholarship program and mission to assist the young women of our community. We will be contacting all members before the next General Meeting on November 16th.
